Free Gun Safety Class

The Free Gun Safety Class provides members and non-members alike the opportunity to learn basic handgun safety rules and our range specific rules.

As the name implies, the class is free. Both classroom lecture and hands-on exercises are included. Topic covered include general safety rules that would apply anywhere, safety rules within our range, handgun parts and operation for both revolver and semi-automatic pistols, ammunition parts and function, handgun ownership responsibility, safely loading, unloading and passing of guns, and other general and range specific rule and policy topics.

Instruction is provided by range approved NRA Certified Instructors and Range Safety Officers.

This free, fun, and informative class is now required to be taken by all new club members. Members may also be referred to the class if a safety incident occurs. New members who may already possess a Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit or are members of law enforcement or are certified instructors still must take the class. Since valuable range specific information is provided in addition to gun safety, all new members who receive a door access card must attend the class within 60 days of new membership signup or referral. Failure to attend the class may result in your door code being deactivated until you do attend. If you have taken the class prior to joining and you have the completion card the class requirement has been satisfied.

Class are typically scheduled on the 3rd Monday of the month from 6 PM to 9 PM. Please contact us if a Monday will never work for you. We may be able to have an alternate date scheduled or conduct a special session.

The Free Gun Safety Class does not qualify for the training requirement for the Colorado Concealed Handgun Permit.

Pistoleras

The Pistoleras is a “women only” multi-session program starting September 11, 2023 at 5:30 pm through March 11, 2024 located at the Pueblo Municipal Shooters, Inc. range. This program provides formal training at each meeting where women can participate, in a non-judgmental environment, to learn the many aspects of handgun ownership and improve their shooting and basic defensive handgun skills. Women of all skill levels are welcome. Registration for the program is required. Sign up below. Registration will be closed once the class is full or has begun.

Each meeting will cover the various aspects of handling handguns, safety, and discussions on topics of interest. The group will then proceed to the range area for live fire practice. Instructors will be available to assist individual shooters. Eye and ear protection are required for all live firing exercises.

Once the session begins, the Pistoleras meet the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 5:30 PM at the PMS range. There will be two levels of classes; one for experienced shooters and one for new shooters. The experienced shooters will use the range for the first hour to improve their shooting skills and/or participate in the Winchester/NRA Marksman Qualification Program while the new shooters are in the classroom. The second hour the new shooters will have use of the range. The cost per meeting to participate (if range time is used) is $2.00 for PMS members and $10 for non-members.

Those shooters who want to join the experienced group should bring their firearm with ammunition to the registration meeting as you will be asked to do a range safety check with live fire consisting of demonstrating safe gun handling and adherence to all range rules.

The sign up for the class is now closed. The class is full. Please watch for the next session if you were unable to get into this class.

About
People fear what they don’t know. We are all responsible for our own protection. Replace that fear of firearms with education and knowledge!

I want to give women and newcomers knowledge in situational awareness, encouragement and instruction in a non-judgmental, comfortable, safe environment and the motivation to be self-reliant. I strive to build self-confidence, positively influence women’s perception of firearms and lessen the fear of feeling vulnerable.

My goal is for both newcomers and women participants to leave my class with a new found confidence in themselves and the ability to handle firearms safely.

About
I am an NRA certified Instructor and Range Safety Officer.

If you were to ask me my philosophy regarding teaching, my answer would be "Better is Better".

I take the responsibility of instructing very seriously and have been involved in teaching/training/instructing for most of my adult life. There are always "minimum" standards and many instructors will only meet those standards when teaching. Personally, I always go above and beyond and set a very high standard for my students. I believe teaching is an honor and a responsibility.

Students should leave a classroom feeling like their time was well spent and the lessons they learned were of value. I always strive to give more than expected. Always try to be better.

Firearms are a valuable tool in todays' society not just for hunting and recreation but also for self defense. I believe strongly in the 2nd amendment but also believe in responsible gun ownership.

I am a former Army Infantry officer of 10 years and learned the skills necessary to become proficient in the use, safety and care of firearms.

I am a full time certified self- defense instructor with Southwest COBRA ( Combat objective battle ready application) and teach several classes including Active Shooter Response Planning, Child abduction prevention, Protection specialist training, basic and advanced self defense and more.

About
I served 20 years in the U.S. Army, 5 years in the Infantry and 15 in Special Forces.

My training philosophy is 'Safety through Competence.' I believe in hands-on training with guns combined with instruction in safety principles, characteristics of guns, and with strict adherence to procedures to build confidence and trust. Presenting this material in a professional and competent manner helps dispel some of the myths surrounding guns and gun owners.

About
The training I provide is based on the best gun handling techniques and safety that top Instructors use around the country for the classes they teach. I am on top of all changes in the law and legislation for our area and many others around the country.

People who I have trained become confident in their gun handling skills and their ability to make good decisions about concealed carry techniques and issues.

Most people learn with a combination of lecture, audiovisual, and hands on. All of these techniques are important in self-protection training. Many of my students have never handled a firearm and are now faced with the real world worries of how they will defend themselves and their loved ones if the time ever presents itself.

No one class will get your training level to where you need to be. These skills and qualifications are built like building blocks with the base being the most important. A good strong base gives you a foundation for the rest of your training throughout your training cycle.

I am currently training individuals and business owners in all aspects of safe gun handling with regard to self-defense and concealed carry.  I have been a shooting sports enthusiast for most of my life, starting with my dad as a young child with shotguns, rifles, and reloading, then migrating to pistols and self-defense.

After I spent 4 years in the United States Air Force, I spent almost 20 years in the Insurance industry as a trainer and Certified Insurance Counselor. I currently hold Double Distinguished Expert status in semi-auto pistol and Defensive Pistol 1 with the NRA.

Become a PMS RSO

This course is conducted in the classroom and in the shooting area. PMS Range Safety Officers will learn roles and responsibilities of a PMS RSO; Range Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs); range inspection; range rules; public interactions, emergency procedures; and firearm stoppages and malfunctions. Each PMS Range Safety Officer will receive an RSO reference material. This is not the NRA RSO course.

This course is typically instructed by the PMS Chief Range Safety Officer, Nick Mangini, with help from current RSOs. Contact Nick at 303-601-6635 to ask about the next class.
